The small lighthouse located on the ferry landing stage at Cacilhas has been inactive since 1978 and, although a low-intensity light is displayed from the lantern during the hours of darkness, this is for purely ornamental purposes.  Despite this long period of inactivity the light tower has had an interesting history.  It was first built in 1886 and appears to have been a prefabricated French design known as a "tourelle".  In 1978, major redevelopment of the port facilities at Cacilhas rendered the light redundant and, in 1983, the Portuguese Navy moved it to the port of Serrata on the island of Terceira in the Azores.  However, the people of Cacilhas did not take the removal of their lighthouse lightly (sorry, couldn't resist that!) and they protested vehemently for a lengthy period.  Such was their persistence that, in 2004, when the light was deactivated in Serrata, the navy agreed to return it to Cacilhas. Work on the move commenced in 2007 and a ceremony to mark its reinstallation in Cacilhas was held in July 2009.  However, the return of the lighthouse didn't see the end of local protests, because the reconstructed tower was painted red instead of its original colour scheme which had been black, and some controversy around this subject is still rumbling on.  The Google Earth imagery for the Cacilhas area had been completed before the tower was rebuilt so there is no meaningful Google Map link for this one.
